Sneak Peek: "Baby R" {Columbus Baby Photographer}

Meet 6 month old "Baby R"...an adorable little girl who was NOT happy to be a model today! LOL! Her parent's said that she has several teeth coming in and wasn't in a good mood but we decided to go ahead and try the session. The poor thing would be happy for a moment while being distracted by Mommy singing a favorite song, me making silly faces, or Daddy with his flashing apps on his phone and then just flip a switch and be so very sad. :-( I know Mom and Dad will be surprised though because there are some amazingly cute photos in the bunch...even with a grumpy little baby. I hope "R" is feeling better this evening!

Three Year Wait for Two Little Syllables

Our little guy, Kyan, is being featured in the Columbus Speech and Hearing Center's April newsletter. Here is our story:

Three Year Wait for Two Little Syllables

Kyan’s mom, Amy, knew something was not right by the time he was six months old. He never really babbled, never smiled, never made a sound other than crying or squealing. When all the other children his age were babbling, saying ‘mamama’ and ‘dadada,’ Kyan just sat and watched. By the time he turned one and still had no sounds, she started to voice her concerns. But everyone kept telling her, ‘His brother is talking for him,’ ‘He's a late talker,’ or ‘He just doesn't have anything to say.’ Amy knew in her heart that there was something wrong, but she pushed her mother’s intuition away and waited.

Right before Kyan's second birthday, they started teaching him sign language. “As soon as he learned a few signs, he became a whole new kid,” Amy said. “He was no longer frustrated because he was able to communicate his wants and needs with signs.” At Kyan’s two year check up, Amy told the doctor he wasn't talking. At first the doctor was not concerned, because he thought Kyan was saying 'mama' and 'dada.' But, he had no words, no sounds, nothing.

Kyan came to Columbus Speech & Hearing Center for a speech evaluation, which indicated he has Apraxia. Amy had done research and knew this meant it was possible Kyan might never speak. “I knew I might never hear his sweet little voice,” said Amy. “Our Speech Language Pathologist, Katie, assured us that it would be a long road but that she was positive we would get him saying words. This was music to my ears!”

Kyan has now been in therapy for almost a year and a half. “I remember the first time Kyan used his voice during a therapy session was to imitate ‘ah’ with his mouth wide open in a microphone, and to produce ‘baa’ when we played with sheep,” his therapist recalls. “His progress has been incredible.”

“From the very first session, I knew that Kyan would make progress quickly because of how motivated he was to communicate and how hard his family was willing to work for Kyan to be able to talk,” shares Katie.

Kyan still struggles with several letter sounds. The /m/ is one of those sounds. Amy remembers about eight months ago when he was able to say the names of everyone else in the family but could not say ‘mommy’ because of the /m/ sound. “I was known as ‘ah-ee’ for months,” says Amy. That is, up until a few weeks ago.

“Kyan climbed up into my lap and out of the blue said ‘mamam!’ I just about fell over! He just kept saying it over and over again…‘mamam,’ ‘mamam,’ ‘mamam.’ I was in tears, his older brother was cheering for him, and Kyan had the biggest smile on his face! He finally got it! That sound that he has been working on for months had finally come,” Kyan’s mom proudly explained. “He demanded that we immediately call everyone we know and tell them his new word! The very next day, he switched the ‘mamam’ to ‘mommy.’ Yes, I waited over three years to hear those two little syllables and I couldn't be more happy to hear them now...over and over again all day!”

We still have a long road ahead of us, but I trust that with Columbus Speech & Hearing Center's help, we will get there!

Sneak Peek: "Baby A" {Columbus Baby Photographer- Milestones}

After two weeks of rescheduling due to my unexpected trip down South to meet my new nephew and a bout of pinkeye for "Baby A", we finally got together for the first session in "A"'s Milestones package. She is 4 months old and just mastered the fine art of rolling over which she chose to show off over and over and over again during our session! "A" wasn't super smiley but was simply adorable none the less. I can't wait to see her again for her next session when she masters the next milestone of sitting up. Enjoy!

Sneak Peek: "Little S" {Columbus Child Photographer}

I just loved shooting with this little guy. "Little S" is at that perfect age to just go out and play while we shoot. We searched for gnomes, played hide and seek, talked about dogs and motorcycles...you name it. Beautiful weather + favorite location + happy, adorable boy = fabulous shoot! Thanks for coming out to play again this year, guys!

Sneak Peek: "Baby E" {Columbus Newborn Photographer}

Yet another good friend of ours came into the studio yesterday for a newborn shoot. Meet adorable two week old "Baby E". She wasn't in the mood to sleep but rather to eat...over and over again! Gotta love a newborn with a big appetite! "E" is a big baby (she was born almost 10 lbs!) so trying to squeeze her into some of my newborn props was a bit of a challenge. :-) I can't wait to watch this little one grow up over the next year. Thanks for letting me play with your precious baby!

Sneak Peek: "Baby S" {Columbus Baby Photographer}

"Baby S" will be three months old soon and she couldn't be any cuter! "S"'s parents are good friends of ours and we had intended on doing maternity photos but with sick kiddos we had to move the date back a bit and then "S" decided to come the day before the session. Oops! We had a great time just chatting and playing around in the studio. "S" was such a trooper and let me try out a couple new ideas. Enjoy!

Sneak Peek: "Baby J" - Day 2

Here are a few more shots of my baby nephew. These were taken today on our our last full day here in Northwest Arkansas. I was battling severe allergy issues while I was shooting this session...seriously, I was wearing a face mask to try to help prevent some of the allergens from getting in. It was horrible but so worth all the sneezing and wheezing to get to shoot with this little guy. He is just so precious!! (I crocheted Jackson a blanket as a gift, so of course I had to use it in a few shots. You can see it in the shots with a blue/green blanket. )
